US Model 1879 Second Type Hotchkiss Navy Rifle

.45-70. 29" barrel secured by two spring retained barrel bands. SN: 4973. Blued and color casehardened finish, full length walnut musket stock with musket style butt. Bolt action tubular magazine repeating military rifle. Top left of receiver marked in three lines with Winchester address and patent dates, ending with 1877. Top left edge of receiver with serial number and HN (Henry Nettleton) inspection. Barrel with Springfield V/P/{Eagle Head} inspection marks, another HN inspection, a naval {Anchor} inspection and the initials W.W.K. for US Navy officer Willian W. Kimball. Counterpane with clear script SWP/1880 cartouche. Second model Hotchkiss safety on rear of upper left of receiver with magazine cut off on the right, M1879 pattern long range rear sight, musket pattern front sight serves as lug for angular socket bayonet, sling swivel on front of triggerguard, sling and stacking swivels on upper barrel band. Includes a slotted 1879 type cleaning rod. Only 2,473 Hotchkiss Navy Rifles were produced, 1,474 of the first type and 999 of the second type. A scarce Indian War era US Navy long arm. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Good. Bore about very good, moderately frosted and oxidized with strong rifling. Metal with some blue, mixed with a plum patina and showing scattered surface oxidation and some pinpricking. Markings remain clear and legible. Mechanically functional action. Stock good, broken and repaired at the wrist and receiver area. Wood sanded with some added finish. Cartouche clear.
